The Lilac Dentistry Method

Dr. Samira Oveson has developed a patient-first comprehensive dental experience. That starts with an in-depth personalized dental exam and leads to a full-service cosmetic consultation and planning. Her methodology was created from her 12 years of experience as a dentist in corporate dentistry and private practice, as well as from knowledge passed down from four generations of dentists.

Lilac Dentistry vs Other Dental Models

  • The Lilac Methodology

Dr. Oveson believes that there is no substitute for one-on-one time with your dentist when it comes to generating the best health and cosmetic outcomes for each patient. With this in mind she has designed a dental experience to maximize your time with her during your dental visit.

    The Lilac Dentistry difference

    • Practice should be owned by the dentist who does the treatment. Dr. Samira Oveson is the sole owner and your sole dental provider. Lilac Dentistry is a 100% female-owned dental practice.

    • The dentist should maximize time getting to know the patient and their dental health. Dr. Oveson does your cleanings and deep cleanings. This increases the time an experienced dentist is spending thinking about your health and answering your questions, without increasing your time in the chair.

    • Evidenced based treatment planning. Dr. Oveson is transparent with treatment plans. She uses an intra oral camera to let you see what she sees so you can trust her judgement without hesitation.

    • Focus on painless dental techniques and a total experience. If a patient is too uncomfortable or has had bad experiences at the dentist they may neglect themselves to avoid having to get dental treatment. Dr. Oveson has taken extreme care to design all her procedures around you walking out with a smile and a new commitment to your dental health.

    • Fast dental procedures. Let’s be honest. No one wants to spend more time than necessary at the dentist. Dr. Oveson has spent over 10,000 hours mastering dental procedures. She realizes that the faster you are able to get in and out. The better the experience will be.

  • The Traditional Solo Practitioner

Most dental offices in Utah are owned by solo practitioners. Although there are differences in the way every dentist practices. The average solo practitioner tends to follow a care model that is geared toward limiting the dentist time with the patient.

Traditional solo practitioner way of thought

    • Sees themselves as a business man rather than a dentist. Hires a less experienced dentist to scale the business. Desires to grow business by hiring dentists to do basic procedures with the goal of one day becoming a corporation.

    • Accepts insurances that require a high volume of patients. Has a goal of spending less time on each patient to increase the number of patients they see each day.

    • Doesn’t want to do hygiene. Hires a hygienist to do hygiene. Any knowledge the hygienist gains about the patient or their health then has to be transferred to the dentist, which rarely happens.

    • Limit knowledge or time to focus on painless techniques or the total experience. Since the average dentist is most concerned about turning treatment. They make a trade off for quick treatment.

    • Increased time waiting in chair or waiting room. Due to the high volume insurance plans. The dentist is forced to overbook the schedule. This creates long wait times.

  • The Corporate Dental Practice

Corporate dentistry is a phenomenon that has risen in popularity over the last 20 years. These dental practices are typically part of multi-office corporations. That ranges from 5 offices to 1,000+ offices. They are mostly owned by private equity or investors who are most concerned about making a profit.

The corporate dental way of thought

    • Desire to maximize low overhead cost. These corporations tend to hire inexperienced dentist with predatory contracts that prey on new dentists lack of legal knowledge. These contracts also incentivize over-treatment with commission based pay agreements.

These dentists typically don’t feel loyal to the corporation and don’t stay at one practice for a long period of time. Thus you may see a different dentist on every visit and have no transfer of knowledge from your visits.

    • Limit amount of time the dentist spends with patient. Dental corporations typically have an office sales manager that will explain why you need a treatment. They also have hygienist perform hygiene treatments.

    • Short term focus with pressure for same day treatment. Since many of the patients of these practices end up leaving for better experiences, corporate dental practices rely on same day treatment and sales managers to convert treatment.

    • Heavy marketing campaigns with introductory offers. Since these practices have high patient turnover they need to continually bring new patients in. They do this by offering low exam fees and then make it up by incentivizing dentists to over diagnose.

    • High re-work rate and low work quality. Since the dentists employed by these corporations are typically new graduates. The quality of work is usually much lower than an experienced dentist. You can expect to have a much higher percentage of rework and unpleasant experiences.
