DENTAL CROWN INFORMATION

What is a Dental Crown?

Dental crowns, also known as dental caps, are fixed prosthetic devices that are placed over a damaged or weakened tooth to restore its shape, size, strength, and appearance. Crowns are designed to encase the entire visible portion of a tooth above the gumline, and they serve various purposes in restorative dentistry.

Tooth Protection

Crowns are used to protect a tooth that has been weakened by extensive decay, a large filling, or a fracture. By covering the tooth, the crown provides strength, protects against crack propagation, and prevents further damage.

Restoration of Function

If a tooth is significantly damaged or worn down, a crown can restore its functionality, allowing the patient to chew and bite properly.

Aesthetic Improvement

Crowns can improve the appearance of a tooth by covering discoloration, misshapen or crooked teeth, and other cosmetic issues. They can be made from materials that closely match the color and texture of natural teeth.

Support for Dental Bridges

Crowns can be used as anchor points for dental bridges. They are placed on the teeth adjacent to a gap left by a missing tooth, and the bridge is attached to them to replace the missing tooth.

Covering Dental Implants

Dental implants, which are artificial tooth roots, are often topped with dental crowns to replace a missing tooth.

Protection After Root Canal

Teeth that have undergone root canal therapy can become brittle over time. Crowns are placed on these teeth to protect them from fracture.

The process of getting a dental crown typically involves the following steps

Tooth Preparation

Your dentist will first prepare the tooth by removing any decay and shaping it to accommodate the crown. In some cases, additional material may be added to build up a tooth if it's severely damaged or worn.

Impression

An impression of the prepared tooth is taken to create a mold. This mold is sent to a dental laboratory where the custom crown is fabricated.

Temporary Crown

While waiting for the permanent crown to be made, a temporary crown is placed over the prepared tooth to protect it.

Crown Placement

Once the permanent crown is ready, you'll return to the dentist's office. The temporary crown is removed, and the permanent crown is placed over the tooth. Your dentist will ensure that it fits properly, matches your bite, and looks natural.

Cementing

After any necessary adjustments are made, the permanent crown is cemented or bonded in place.

Dental crowns can be made from various materials, including porcelain, ceramic, metal alloys (like gold or silver), and a combination of materials (e.g., porcelain-fused-to-metal). The choice of material depends on the tooth's location, function, and cosmetic considerations, as well as your dentist's recommendation.
